Russian President Vladimir Putin held more than three hours of talks in Moscow with senior U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as Washington continues diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
The meeting focused on possible approaches to resolving the conflict, although neither side announced a major breakthrough. Kremlin officials described the discussions as useful and said that several issues connected to the war and future relations between Russia and the United States were discussed.
The talks come after years of fighting that have caused extensive destruction and a large humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine remain deeply divided over territory, security arrangements and Ukraine’s future relationship with NATO.
The Kremlin has continued to insist on conditions that Kyiv has rejected, while Ukrainian officials have repeatedly called for a settlement that preserves the country’s territorial integrity and security.
The involvement of senior American officials indicates that Washington is continuing to pursue direct diplomacy with Moscow. The U.S. representatives were also expected to engage with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Despite the latest diplomatic activity, there is still no clear indication that the two sides are close to a final peace agreement.
